It’s Wise Up Wednesday: Get Your Contract Checked For Free With “Checkit”!
Our “Wise Up Wednesdays” are based on a lifetime in construction, and the 28 years spent resolving disputes and problems exclusively for Specialist Contractors, from a few £thousand pounds to literally tens of £millions!
Last week’s WUW was a very brief one about checking the terms you are letting yourself in for, BEFORE you put your head in that contractual noose!
It’s easy to jump in when entering into a contract, and not checking the specific terms that will apply to your works is one of the most common and often fatal mistakes I see on a daily basis!
Don’t get caught out by those dirty tricks hidden in the small print.
Announcing – “Checkit” – Our Free Contract Checking Service
If you want to cut to the chase it’s here: Try Checkit It’s Free!
This free service is based on the principle that Standard Form contracts such as JCT, MF/1, NEC3 etc. were created to be easy to understand, simple to use, and fair to both parties and should need little or no amendment.
So why don’t Contractors use them?
When Contractors introduce amendments to Standard Forms or even create their own ‘bespoke’ contracts, you need to have your wits about you! Because, if the Contractor has amended a Standard Form contract or sent a bespoke contract, not a single one of those amendments or terms will be written in your favour.
Rushing into a contract without understanding whether or not it is onerous can be fatal.
What This Free Service Provides
When you upload your contract to this portal one of our expert team of advisors will carry out an initial review and if any of the terms are onerous, we will tell you so.
Within 48 hours (other than contracts uploaded at weekends and public holidays), you will receive an email telling you whether or not the contract is onerous.
Please feel free to use our new free service: Try Checkit It’s Free!
What This Free Service Does NOT Provide
This free service will not provide specific contractual or legal advice as to the reasons why the contract is onerous. It is not a substitute for the professional contractual advice that is available from one of our Consultants.
It is however a very important first step in coming to terms with and ridding this industry of onerous terms. Please feel free to give it a try, after all it won’t cost you anything!
Being vigilant and checking over the contract before entering into it is the best way to prevent yourself from being caught out. It can be tricky, so don’t be afraid to get our professional advice.
