Wise Up Wednesday: It’s Official – Shop The Bad Payers!
It’s now official that you should shop the bad payers!
According to a report in PBC Today the government will ‘call out’ construction companies who indulged in poor payment practices during the Covid-19 crisis, says the minister for small business, Paul Scully.
So, if that’s the official line let’s make sure it happens!
The report says that during a webinar hosted by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) Scully said that “too many large construction firms have changed their payment terms during the current Covid-19 crisis to protect themselves at the expense of smaller businesses,
“Everyone must be responsible” he said and “The government should be taking the lead at both central and local level by setting a good example on payment practices – we want to keep working with our supply chains.
“However, far too many big businesses are changing their payment terms, which is creating a huge David versus Goliath impact,” Scully said.
Payment abuse vs. best practice
He also said that we should point out examples of payment abuse to his department, but equally to highlight best practice that could encourage others to follow suit.
Shop The Bad Payers – Report Them Anonymously
One of the problems we have found over the years is that most Specialist Contractors are reluctant to report bad practice for fear of reprisals or blacklisting. That’s why we are providing a mechanism for you to report bad practice anonymously.
If you see or are subject to bad payment practice you can share it with us and we will report it to Scully’s department in such a way that the source cannot be traced back to you.
So come on let’s make this happen and bring to fruition the prime minister’s warning that, when this is all over, people would be asking: “What did you do to help other businesses and your community?”
In other words those that behaved badly, and didn’t pay properly or abused their supply chain in one way or another, should be remembered and by implication, avoided.
